Like you pineoak I was a professional photographer for years and always used my hood, but when I first started photography back in the early 90's they hadn't yet been able to control flare and ghosting very well and while all optical designs still exhibit this behavior, I must admit that today's optics are greatly improved over the optics of yesteryear.
